Application Instructions

Students will need to demonstrate an ability to study at least 3 A-level subjects by achieving an average of 38 points over 8 GCSEs with a Grade 4 at least in English and Mathematics. Students should gain a Grade 6 or above in subjects they wish to study at A Level. Points are worked out on the bases that a Grade 9 = 9 points, Grade 8 = 8 points etc.

Course Details

An enjoyment of, and an interest in, Drama and Theatre, both as a participant and as a member of an audience, is essential for success at A-level. You will extend your skills, knowledge and understanding encouraging life-long learning and providing access to related careers. You will also be encouraged to appreciate the significance of social, cultural and historical influences on theatre practice both past and present.

CONTENT

Component 1: Theatre Workshop (20% of A-level)
Learners can choose to be assessed on either acting or design of this component by creating, developing and performing and original interpretation of an extract from a text. Learners will produce a final performance or design and a rehearsal portfolio.
Component 2: Text in Action (40% of A-level)
Learners can choose to be assessed on either acting or design of this component by creating, developing and performing a devised performance and a supporting extract from a text which is chosen by themselves.
Learners will produce a final performance or design, a rehearsal portfolio and a 5 minute presentation.
Component 3: Text in Performance (40% of A-level)
Learners will sit an examination structured as follows:

  • Section A: Two questions, based on two of the following set texts: ‘Hedda Gabler’ by Henrik Ibsen and ‘Love and Information’ by Caryl Churchill
  • Section B: One question based on a 10 minute extract from a text.

Entry requirements

  • GCSE Drama, Grade 5 or above. (BTEC Performing Arts accepted in place of GCSE Drama)
  • The expectation that learners will proactively engage in viewing live professional theatre outside of the classroom.
