Course Summary

The WJEC Level 3 Applied Diploma in Criminology is an engaging qualification that combines elements of law, psychology and sociology to explore crime, criminal behaviour and the criminal justice system. Equivalent in size to one A Level, the course is designed for students who are interested in understanding why crime occurs, how society responds to offending and how justice is delivered. You will investigate real-life criminal cases, analyse evidence, evaluate different explanations for criminal behaviour and examine the effectiveness of crime prevention and punishment. Throughout the course, you will develop valuable transferable skills including research, critical thinking, analysis, evaluation, communication and problem solving.

Course Details

The qualification consists of four units:

• Unit 1: Changing Awareness of Crime – Investigate different types of crime, media representations and public perceptions, before designing and evaluating a campaign to raise awareness of a crime-related issue.

• Unit 2: Criminological Theories – Study biological, psychological and sociological explanations for criminal behaviour and consider how these theories influence crime prevention.

• Unit 3: Crime Scene to Courtroom – Explore the criminal justice process, including crime scene investigation, forensic evidence, police procedures and the court system.

• Unit 4: Crime and Punishment – Examine the aims of punishment, sentencing, rehabilitation and the effectiveness of the criminal justice system.

How will it be delivered and assessed?

Assessment is through a combination of internal and external assessment:

• Unit 1 – Internally assessed controlled assessment

• Unit 2 – External written examination

• Unit 3 – Internally assessed controlled assessment

• Unit 4 – External written examination

This balance of coursework and examinations allows students to demonstrate both their practical application of knowledge and their understanding of key criminological concepts.
