Course Summary
This apprenticeship develops the knowledge and skills which are necessary to become a bricklayer which includes laying bricks, blocks and other types of building components in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures.
Course Details
A bricklayers main purpose is to lay bricks and blocks, sometimes utilising modern methods of construction and premanufactured elements to construct walls. Bricklayers carry out simple setting out, prepare mortar and use a trowel to lay bricks, mortar and apply damp-proof materials to complete the project to specification and required design. Bricklayers use spirit levels and plumb lines to check building alignment and use hammers and chisels to shape and trim bricks and blocks. Bricklayers typically work outdoors on construction sites, in most weathers and at height.
Working in this occupation you will interact with your immediate team and the site management team, which could include a senior or craft bricklayer providing advice and guidance. You would also often liaise with other construction trades such as site carpenters and roofers who could work for their own organisation or another contractor. You are expected to do this with due regard to all safety aspects involved with working on a construction site, ensuring the health, safety and wellbeing of yours and others at all times.
How will it be delivered and assessed?
Your assessments consist of 3 components:
The test will have 40 multiple-choice questions. You will have 60 minutes to complete it.
Skills Test - 3 simulated practical tasks that will holistically assess the skills, knowledge and behaviours described in the Apprenticeship Standard.
Oral Questioning - approximately ten questions to confirm knowledge & behaviours which are part of the portfolio you have completed. You can use it to help answer the questions.
Entry requirements
You will be expected to achieve English and maths at level 2 as part of your apprenticeship.
An interview will be required to identify your potential, commitment and motivation to achieve the apprenticeship. We will also use the interview as an opportunity to discuss your employer. Depending on your level of English and maths, you may be asked to complete an initial assessment to show your ability to complete a further level 2 qualification in English and / or maths.
