Course Summary

This challenging and exciting course aims to support students in developing social skills, self-esteem, confidence and new skills. As part of the course students will complete the John Muir Award. The John Muir is an environmental award scheme focused on wild places. It helps people connect with, enjoy, and care for wild places. It's non-competitive, inclusive and accessible. It is recognition of a young person’s successful journey of self-discovery and development. Its balanced programme develops the whole person in an environment of social interaction and team working. You'll find yourself helping people or the community through volunteering, getting fitter and developing skills. You will also complete a programme of activities such as “A beginners guide to your car”, “Making things with wood”, “Making simple meals” and “Sports and Active Leisure”. You will also gain new skills out in the community at Mousehold Heath, Norfolk Trails etc.

Personal and Social Development will help students to learn how to manage social relationships effectively, manage money and build self-esteem and confidence. The range of vocational tasters will improve students employability and help them to make better decisions about their next step. Development of maths and English through Functional skills are a key element of the course.

Students will need to have successfully applied for and received funding.

How will it be delivered?

Assessment is informal and on-going. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is assessed informally over the year with a final expedition externally assessed. There are opportunities to improve English and maths via City and Guilds functional skills qualifications.

Entry requirements

Applicants do not need formal entry requirements but should be working towards entry level 3 for English. Students will need to have good attendance. All applicants will be required to attend an interview.
