Required subjects

You will have to do all of these subjects in Years 10 and 11.

English Communicating with others; listening; reading; expressing your ideas in writing; spelling, punctuation and grammar. In English Literature you study different types of writing such as novels, poetry and drama. Speaking; listening; reading; writing clearly and accurately; using information. English helps in any career but if you like English think about advertising, the media or management, being a solicitor, a TV researcher, a journalist, a librarian or a receptionist. Good English is important where you work with people – the police, social work, estate agency, beauty consultant or selling.
Information and Communication Technology How and when to use ICT; to record and test data and how to present your results.

Double, single, applied?
There are short and full GCSEs and the applied ICT double subject vocational GCSE.
Using ICT accurately and efficiently; evaluation; how to present information to suit your audience. You use ICT in nearly every job. If you particularly like the subject you might enjoy being a network manager, systems designer, database administrator, technical support, a forensic computer analyst or work on a helpdesk.
Mathematics Using numbers; solving problems (algebra); shapes and measurement (geometry); how to collect, process and solve problems using numerical data (statistics). Using numbers; problem solving; thinking logically and working accurately. All scientists use maths as do engineers, electricians, motor mechanics, plumbers and builders. Maths is important in financial jobs like accounting, banking and insurance. You’ll use maths in business, design, the Health Service and sales.
Science Living things and the natural world; how things work; why things happen the way they do.

Double, single, applied?
You can study science in different ways. Most students take a double GCSE but some will do single science. Some schools offer three separate sciences – biology, chemistry and physics. And there is the new Applied Science course, which is a double subject that looks at how science is used in work and society. Check what your school offers.
Planning; thinking logically; working systematically; testing out ideas; finding and presenting evidence. Agricultural scientist, astronomer, environmental scientist, food scientist, forensic scientist, meteorologist, veterinary scientist, zoologist – all careers where you use science. But don’t forget that engineering, building and nearly every job in the Health Service uses scientific knowledge. And then there’s beauty therapy, working with animals, electrical work and many more.
