In England, the HNC (short for Higher National Certificate) is a BTEC qualification awarded by Edexcel. HNCs are roughly equivalent to first year of university and a Certificate of Higher Education, but they're a year below the Higher National Diploma (HND) and two below a bachelor's degree.
Studied full-time, the qualification normally takes one year, or two years part-time. Many HNCs cover the same areas as an HND and it is often possible to "top up" to an HND with one year's full-time study after successfully completing the HNC.
