3. Further Education

Further Education

If you are currently on a one-year course at sixth form or college, you may be thinking about carrying on to take another course.

There are lots of courses available at local sixth forms and colleges. You can find details of these on Help You Choose.

The types of courses and qualifications available include:

  • A and AS Levels and International Baccalaureate
  • vocational courses such as BTEC and OCR Diplomas, where you learn more about a broad area of work that interests you
  • other awards, certificates or diplomas (e.g. City and Guilds) covering a narrower job specific area

Whatever your choice, you need to find out as much as possible about the courses you're interested in; what they involve, where they may lead and qualifications you'll need for entry.

Thinking of carrying on with full-time study? Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I need to take a further course for the career I'm interested in?
  • How much do I enjoy the studying I'm doing at the moment?
  • Will the range of choices open to me be different if I take a higher level course?
  • Have I thought about a back-up plan just in case my first idea doesn't work out?

If you're not sure further study is right for you, take a look at the work and training ideas on the Apprenticeships and Employment pages.
